The School of Science, Tsinghua University was founded in 1929. Many of China 's distinguished scientists and scholars were among the School's graduates. But, as a result of the nationwide restructuring of China 's higher education system, and with many of its faculty and students having been transferred to other universities in 1952, the School stayed stagnant for a long time. Beginning in 1978, to serve China 's renewed efforts for national construction and science development, Tsinghua re-established the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Modern Physics, the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biology. In 1985, Tsingha's School of Science was formally reinstated by the Ministry of Education, with Professor Zhou Guangzhao, the then president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, appointed as the Dean of the School of Science . In 1997, the Center for Advanced Study in Tsinghua University was founded, with Nobel Laureate Professor C. N. Yang as its Honorary Director. The Center has made great strides in becoming one of the world's leading research institutions. In 2002, the Zhou Peiyuan Center for Applied Mathematics was established, with the world famous scholar Professor C. C. Lin as its Honorary Director. These invigorating undertakings are steps taken by Tsinghua for its School of Science to enter a new era of growth and development, aiming to advance knowledge in science and to produce distinguished scholars of the future.

The School of Science is situated in the northwest corner of the Tsinghua University campus. It is composed of four departments: Mathematical Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Biotechnology. All these four departments of the School offer one or more undergraduate majors programs, and are authorized to confer master degrees and doctoral degrees. These departments also have postdoctoral research programs. Having large library collections, equipped with the best available instruments and large-scale computing networks, departments in the School of Science have excellent educational and research resources, enabling their faculties and students to carry out research and share their research findings. Within the School of Science are also several key laboratories and institutes, such as the Ministry Key Laboratories of China .

The design of the educational programs in the School of Science is aimed at ˇ°high quality, advanced learning, multi-disciplinary and innovativeˇ± to enhance students' grasp of fundamental science and mathematical ability, to widen students' interests in cross disciplines, as well as to cultivate the students' adaptability in technological innovation to meet the challenge of China's developing economy. Half of our undergraduates go on to graduate studies for master or Ph. D. degrees without examination. Since 1997, a special group, namely, the ˇ°Basic Science Classˇ±, has been in operation in the School of Science , every year accepting 200 entering undergraduate students having high enthusiasm in science. These students take intensive courses in science and mathematics throughout the 4 years as undergraduates in Tsinghua. In the autumn of 2008, there were 1642 undergraduates, 396 master degree candidates, 725 Ph. D. degree candidates and 133 post-doctors in the School of Science .

The School of Science has a total of 280 faculty members, including 149 full professors and 98 associate professors, with half of them having Ph. D. degrees. Among them 15 of our faculty members have been elected Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 1 as Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Faculty members undertake undergraduate and graduate teaching duties as well as engage in research, including various national science projects. Every year, our faculty members publish hundreds of papers and tens of books. They have received many prestigious awards in national and municipal academic competitions.

The School of Science has been actively engaged in international collaborations. It has exchange programs with many prestigious academic institutions in the world and has hosted many international conferences. Many of our faculty members often attend international conferences and have very close relationships with their overseas colleagues.

With the rapid development of the national economy, the importance of science has been increasingly recognized. Career opportunities with abundant choices are available to our graduates. Every year, demand for our graduates exceeds supply. Almost all of our graduates can find satisfactory positions in education and research institutions, industrial and service enterprises, and government agencies. Major in science has become one of the most popular choices by students in Tsinghua University .

With strong national support and in the face of unprecedented opportunities, the School of Science is poised to become a national leader in science education and research. It seeks to advance science through first rate research, cultivate talents through excellent education, and ultimately to serve the society by combining science knowledge with the strong engineering capability of Tsinghua University . The School of Science strives to do its share in meeting the challenge of developing the University into one of the very best academic institutions in the world.
